The most common Meridia side effects include, headache, dry mouth, anorexia, constipation, insomnia, increase in blood pressure, increase in heart rate, mental impairments, heart disease, stroke, seizures, and increased sweating, however Meridia is linked to severe and deadly side effects such as pulmonary hypertension (PPH) - an uncommon and occasional fatal sickness with no known cause that causes a rise in blood pressure in the lungs that ends up feeling like a continuous breathlessness with minimal exertion, lightheadedness, exhaustion, fainting, and pains in the chest. Other Meridia side effect risks include heart valve disease or cardiac valve dysfunction. When the valves in the heart allow blood flow backwards through them, it’s called heart valve disease.

On March 19, 2002, Public Citizen, a consumer advocacy group presented a petition to the FDA after 29 deaths and hundreds of severe Meridia side effects were reported. Even though the FDA’s advisory board voted The FDA first approved Meridia despite the advisory board not being in favor of it. Instead of relying on short-term trials, Public Citizen believes that the FDA should increase the standard for approval of diet drugs and require drug makers to reveal a definite health advantage.
Who is the Public Citizen?
In 1971, Public Citizen – a national, nonprofit consumer advocacy organization, was founded by Ralph Nader to stand for consumer interests in Congress, the executive branch and the courts. Public Citizen has petitioned for the ban of four other FDA approved drugs since 1996 and three of the drugs were banned and one strictly limited. The side effects are found by Public Citizen to be just as hazardous to people.
What is the response of the FDA to Public Citizen’s petition?
The Public Citizen’s petition is being considered by the FDA and they will determine if the Meridia side effects are satisfactory or if the safety issues are more important than the benefits. Regarding the safety of Meridia, there is a Europe wide investigation and just lately, Canada started their investigation.
